ENGAGING SPEECHES THAT INSPIRE ACTION

Move The Line

In “Move the Line,” I invite you to join me on a journey of self-discovery and growth, tailored specifically for athletic directors, coaches, and leaders in the world of sports. This heartfelt speech draws from my own experiences, particularly the challenges of growing up with a father who chose not to be part of my life. It’s a story that resonates with anyone who has ever felt the weight of expectations or the sting of failure.

At the core of this message is the idea that many of us live our lives in relation to a metaphorical “line”—a measure of success or failure. When we achieve our goals, it’s easy to relax and let our standards slip. But when we stumble, the line becomes a painful reminder of where we fell short, and we scramble to get back to it. The truth is, both scenarios can trap us, leading to a narrow view of our identity based on where we stand in relation to that line.

For athletic directors, this is especially poignant. You might find yourself grappling with the pressures of maintaining a winning record while also fostering a healthy culture within your teams. It’s tempting to overlook issues like coach retention, character development, or even serious concerns like alcoholism when the wins are piling up. But what happens when we allow ourselves to become complacent?

In this speech, I’ll share how moving the line daily can transform not just your perspective, but also the culture of your entire organization. Instead of merely striving to be better than yesterday’s achievements, let’s focus on nurturing a thriving environment where every team member can genuinely grow, regardless of wins or losses. Together, we can create a legacy that goes beyond the scoreboard and truly reflects our values.

Join me as we explore how to continually shift the line and redefine success—not just for ourselves, but for everyone we lead. This is more than just a speech; it’s an invitation to embrace a mindset of resilience, integrity, and unwavering commitment to growth. Let’s move the line together!

Who You Riding With

In “Who You Riding With,” I invite you to take a deep dive into the nature of friendship and the roles that different people play in our lives. This engaging and insightful speech focuses on the three types of friends we encounter on our journey: co-pilots, same-lane friends, and same-road friends.

Imagine your life as a car ride. Co-pilots are those rare individuals who sit next to you, sharing the steering wheel and navigating the twists and turns of life alongside you. Same-lane friends are those who might be traveling parallel to you, offering support but not always sharing the same direction. Then there are same-road friends—those who join you for a stretch but may not be on the journey for the long haul.

The challenge arises when we confuse these roles, placing our trust, vulnerabilities, and expectations in the wrong people. We often set ourselves up for disappointment, believing we can have a multitude of co-pilots when, in reality, finding just a few true co-pilots in a lifetime is a significant blessing. As TD Jakes wisely said, there are friends who are for you, friends who are for what you are for, and friends who are against what you are against.

This speech encourages you to embrace the reality of your relationships and to mature in how you engage with others. By understanding the different types of friendship, you can learn to appreciate each one for what it offers without placing undue pressure on those that are more casual. This perspective allows you to enjoy the rich tapestry of friendships that life presents, recognizing that each type has its own value and purpose.

Join me as we explore the dynamics of friendship, and together, let’s cultivate a healthier understanding of who we choose to ride with on this journey called life. This isn’t just about friendships—it’s about building a supportive network that genuinely enriches our lives.
